Groundhog Day

February 2, 2021

To see or not to see?  If he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, spring is near. No matter what Punxsutawney Phil tells us, we are going to be prepared. Here are some wine ideas to pair with Phil’s predictions!

If it’s winter we still must face, here are some red wine recommendations for you:
  • Chambourcin Reserve – medium-bodied, dry red aged in oak with notes of blackberry.
  • Berlyn – light-bodied, semi-dry red wine with cocoa and cherry notes.
  • Nouveau – this semi-dry red wine is light-bodied and fruit forward.
  • Trapolino – medium-bodied semi-sweet red wine that is very approachable and fruity
  • Augie’s Blackberry – port-style blackberry wine that is perfect with dessert or as dessert.
And if spring be sweetly on its way, some white wine ideas.
  • ISC Sec – soft and flavorful traditional method sparkling wine with honey and citrus notes and a hint of sweetness.
  • Chardonel – fruit-forward dry white wine with complex aromas and flavors
  • Vignoles – light-bodied, semi-dry white wine with tropical notes
  • Sweet William – fruity, semi-sweet white wine that is similar in style to a sweet Riesling
  • Moscato – sweet white wine with fresh fruit flavors and aromas.

Fun Facts about Groundhog Day
  • The first Groundhog Day was celebrated in 1887
  • The Punxsutawney groundhog has been accurate about 40% of the time.
  • The Punxsutawney groundhog was named Br’er Groundhog (and his friend was Br’er Rabbit) prior to 1961, when they changed is name to Phil.
  • Despite the name change, the members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club say it has been the same groundhog since 1887 making the predictions. That would mean that Punxsutawney Phil  is 134 years old this year!
